Smallies have vertical bars along the side of their body, a shallow notch in the dorsal fin, and the lower jaw does not extend beyond the eye. They are usually brownish-green, brownish-orange, or bronze in color, although that can vary. Smallies do not generally get as big as largemouths.
Largemouths have a horizontal bar that runs the length of their body, a rather deep notch in the dorsal fin, and the lower jaw extends well beyond the eye. Largemouths usually exhibit more green in their coloration, but again, it varies.
