Friends and Fishing
by Brian King

The recent Mid-Atlantic Fishing Rodeo (June 2000) started me thinking about fishing and our fellow anglers. While I was certainly excited to fish the beautiful Shenandoah River, it was the thought of meeting other river anglers that really drove me to attend that event. We interact with one another behind our computer screens or by telephone, but there is no substitute for meeting someone face to face. I have a whole new outlook and perception of the folks I met that weekend. Now when I read a post on the board or receive an email, I can visualize that person and their facial expressions, and it gives me a more complete picture.

Most river anglers are probably content to fish alone most of the time either by nature or through experience. That practice was set aside at the rodeo and done so gladly as the attendees shared the water with one another. It still amazes me how the folks who frequent this site are so willing to help one another and share information! I have belonged to many groups and organizations over the years, but the kindred spirit shared by river anglers, and smallie anglers in particular, is more prevalent than in any other group. It was a common bond that brought us all together from different states, backgrounds, and walks of life.

If you ever have the opportunity to meet a "cyber" friend in person, do not pass it up! I dare say the rodeo resulted in the strengthening of existing friendships and the beginning of new ones. We are fortunate here at RS.com to have so many great folks who contribute to the passion we all have for river smallmouth fishing! To the folks I recently met, it was truly a pleasure and I learned so much from just one weekend. To the folks I have yet to meet, I look forward to shaking your hand and sharing that same kindred spirit!

Good Fishing!
Brian
