Autumn is in the Air
by Brian King

Today, September 22, 2000, is the first official day of Autumn. Here in Kentucky, Autumn has been in the air for the past week. The temperatures have cooled and the leaves are even beginning to fall. Spring is normally considered the time of a new beginning, but I find Autumn to be invigorating and exciting! It means an end to the long, hot, muggy days and the start of refreshing temperatures and crisp air. In short, it's a great time to be outdoors!

I thoroughly enjoy fishing this time of year. If you normally hang up the rod and reel at summer's end, you are missing out on some great smallmouth action! I know many anglers are also hunters, myself included, and hunting takes priority now, but if you can find time to get on the water even two or three times, do it! I find the smallies to be particularly aggressive and eager to eat. There will be a "window of opportunity", if you will, between when the bronze move from their summer haunts to their wintering areas that they will be feeding heavily. How far they move and where they move to depends on your river or stream. The bottom line is the fishing can be wonderful if you are on the river during this time. Not only is the weather refreshing, but you will most likely have the water to yourself. It's a great time to escape, enjoy the changing scenery and colors, and relax! Autumn is also the perfect opportunity for taking beautiful photos.

Don't hang up that rod and put away the tackle just yet. Load up your canoe or kayak or don the waders and get out and enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer! I consider this the most exciting time of the year and many people miss out because they look at it as being the end. I can't guarantee you'll set any personal fishing records, but that's not the point. Don't spend too much time thinking about it or the opportunity will be gone and winter will be here.

Autumn is in the air....get out and enjoy it to the fullest!!!

Best regards,
Brian
