MATERIALS:
- Hook: size 4 or 6 long-shank (2x-3x) streamer hook
- Tail: white maraqbou
- Tail flash: 3-4 strands of pearl crystal flash on each side of the hook.
- Body: pearl estaz (i.e., cactus chenille), medium
- Hackle: white webby saddle hackle
- Eyeballs: 1/32 oz lead (or your choice)
TYING INSTRUCTIONS:
- Paint eyes white with black pupils, lacquer with "Hard as Nails".
- Tie on eyes 1/4 shank-length back from hook eye, clouser style (on
top of shank, so fly rides hook up).
- Tie in good hunk of marabou at hook bend. Tie two strands of
crystal flash on each side of the hook and fold back over themselves,
facing rear, to lock in thread still at hook bend.
- Tie in hackle and estaz at hook bend. Wrap thread to just in back
of eyes.
- Wrap estaz evenly up to thread rubbing the estaz strands backward as
you go, tie off, but do not cut.
- Wrap hackle to thread and tie off/cut hackle. Try not to crush
estaz fibers as you wrap hackle and pluck out any crushed estaz with a
bodkin. Wrap thread up to ahead of eyes.
- X-wrap estaz at the eyeballs. Tie off and cut estaz in front of
eyeballs.
- Make a nice smooth head of thread, tie off with half-hitches, and
lacquer.
NOTES: "Pattern here is for pearl (pictured), but it is also a great
fly in black, olive, root-beer, and purple."
