Wooly Minnow

MATERIALS:
  • Hook: size 4 long shank streamer hook.
  • Tail: white zonker strip (bunny strip)
  • Body: spun white wool, clipped to shape.
  • Underbody (optional): lead wire wraps 2/3 length of shank.

TYING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Tie on thread at hook bend.
  2. Tie on zonker strip tail at hook bend. Hair on strip should be about twice as long as hook shank. Wrap tight and add a drop of superglue to secure.
  3. Begin spinning wool, much as you would spin deer har, at the base of the tail. Work your way forward spinning clumps of wool toward the hook eye. Pack the spun wool clumps tightly against each other, toward the hook bend, as you progress. The durability of the fly can be increased by adding a couple of half-hitches in between clumps of wool. Finish spinning wool and tie off at the hook eye. Spinning a small clump of wool at the final point (nearest the shank) will give the fly a nice tapered appearance when trimmed. The fly will look like an unholy furball right now.
  4. Trim the spun wool to shape (see picture): The fly is trimmed flat on the bottom and humped on the top, near the front of the fly. It is trimmed fairly flat side-to-side.
  5. Go fish!

NOTES: "This fly is a version of the Schenk's White Minnow, a highly effective smallie fly that imitates a chub minnow beautifully. Ed Schenk ties his with rabbit fur dubbing, mine I tie with spun wool. Both are great in slower moving pools, around grassbeds, and in the cuts between ledges. Sometimes I just completely dead drift this fly, other times a short sharp strip or two will catch bass. Rabbit strip tail gives it great action in the water."
