In Memory of Galen "Skip" Walters, Sr.
aka "River Rat"

"Live as if you expected to live a hundred years, but might die tomorrow." -Ann Lee

Galen 'Skip' Walters, Sr. This is not exactly what I had in mind for the next editorial and it saddens me to write it. Actually, this is not really an editorial and I'm not sure I'm qualified to do this, but it only seems appropriate to bestow honor upon one of our own. Galen "Skip" Walters, Sr., known as "River Rat" to most of us, lost his life tragically, yet ironically, doing what he loved so much....smallmouth fishing. Skip was fishing the Susquehanna River on Thursday, Feb. 8 and apparently fell into the river while repairing the motor on his boat. When Skip did not return home, his son called the police to report him missing. Officials found his boat on Friday anchored in the Susky below Brunner Island and upriver from the railroad bridge. Skip's life jacket was still in the boat. That very day was Skip's birthday and he was 49 years young when the river took him.

Skip had been a regular here for quite some time. We exchanged many emails and I found him to be knowledgeable, polite, and humorous. I remember he told me how thrilled he was when he found River Smallies.com because he could share his love for smallie fishing with others. Skip thoroughly enjoyed contributing to the forum and spending time online with all of you. He believed everyone had something to contribute. He was always quick to offer assistance to anyone who had a question and was particularly good at fielding questions concerning jet and jonboats. He also enjoyed light-hearted banter with Barb, Al, Heff, Woodchuck, Billy, and others. I know Skip was planning to fish with several of you this year.

Skip made countless posts to the message forum, but I found some from the time he took his grandson fishing that I have copied here -

Friday, August 18, 2000:
"I look forward to the weekend to go fishing every week, all week long. And I always cannot wait to get on the water, but this week the reason I cannot wait is even stronger because I am taking my little buddy this time and it will be his first shot at fishing."

Saturday, August 19, 2000:
"Well, I went to the Susky in the morning to get my fishing in and then I took my wife and grandson up to the Potomac. I thought I would let him catch some of the hand-sized bluegill up there, but the fish had other ideas. I told my wife if she caught a fish to hand the pole to my grandson. Well, she got so excited that she forgot to hand the pole over. Anyway, I caught a few bass and let him bring them in. The water is low and the grass is all over the place. I need a jet vega-matic!"

Monday, August 21, 2000:
"Had a good weekend! Fished the Susky, fished the Potomac, and fished the Susky. Took my grandson fishing and showed him how to drive the tractor. Took my nephew from TN to the Susky and he had a good time! Had a family-fishing weekend."

Skip was usually trying to bring some humor to heated message board dicussions. He would even post under a psuedo name in an attempt to be a mediator, but his style of "online speaking" always gave him away. During a Roundtable discussion of cold water tactics, things got pretty heated and some off-hand references were made to rats. Skip tried to lighten things up by saying, "Well, I can tell one thing, you guys sure do not like rats!". If Skip became directly involved in a serious disagreement with someone on the board, he would always send me a note to apologize. I always told him an apology was not necessary, but I think he felt better by doing so.

In another discussion, Skip jokingly called some of us "turkeys" for not replying to his question. I shot back that here we had a Rat calling us turkeys...which would I rather be? He replied that he resembled a rat so he didn't mind being called one. That kind of friendly exchange was not uncommon with Skip. You can read the last discussion he posted to where he told of his outing with Yakfish. The situation could have turned out badly for both of them, but thankfully it did not, and in typical Rat fashion, the discussion took on a humorous tone.

Skip tried several times to email us a photo for the gallery, but for some reason it never worked. His wife has graciously sent us one for use in the permanent tribute we will have for Skip here on the site. I did not have the opportunity to meet him in person, something I would have looked forward to very much. Those who have can attest to the fact that he was every ounce the generous man his emails and posts made him out to be.

I am proposing that the upcoming Susky rodeo be renamed "The Galen 'Skip' Walters, Sr. Memorial Rodeo" in honor of River Rat. I think he would've liked that. I know he would want the rodeo to go on as planned. He intended to be there and meet many of you. It's a small way to honor his memory....doing what he loved to do....smallmouth fishing! What better place to honor him than at streamside?

If there is something to be learned from this tragic incident, it is this - SAFETY! I am not going to preach, but please take this as a warning and always wear a life vest when fishing or boating. We'll never know why Skip wasn't wearing his, but in the cold conditions he was in, it was even more prudent that he wear it. This subject has been discussed many times in the forum. If it doesn't hit home as a result of this tragedy, it probably never will.

In Skip's board profile, he had this as his personal quote:
"Smallmouths: one pound fish, one ton attitude!"

I believe I can speak on behalf of the entire staff when I say Skip will be sorely missed and our hearts go out to his family! Perhaps he is looking down right now from a better place wanting us to move forward. It is a sad day for the RS family, but the best we can do is remember Rat fondly....I'm sure he would like that!

Galen "Skip" Walters, Sr. lived!

With a heavy heart,
Brian
