Blue Fox Super Vibrax
by Brian King

I know an in-line spinner may not be the first lure that comes to the mind of a serious smallie angler, but I have used in-lines with great success. These lures do not require finesse on the part of the user nor do they require hours of practice to master. Simply tie one on, make an accurate cast, use a steady retrieve, and you've got it.

My top producing in-line spinner has been the Blue Fox Super Vibrax, without question. This past spring I took a trip to my favorite smallie river for some pre-spawn action. The weather decided to be uncooperative and as a result the river level was up and the water was very cloudy. I went out one afternoon and caught 41 smallies including a fat four pounder. Every fish was caught on a Super Vibrax! The smallies just hammered it! I have also used this lure in October with the same great results.

There are two versions of this lure that I use. The first is a size 2 in either silver with a yellow foxtail or silver with a white foxtail. The other is a size 3 in the same color combinations. The size 2 weighs 3/16 of an ounce and the size 3 weighs 1/4 of an ounce. There is definately a difference in the two. The 1/4 oz. allows for a farther cast, but it will also sink quicker and can get hung up on rocks if you aren't paying attention. I use six or eight pound test with the size 3 Vibrax. The 3/16 oz. version doesn't carry quite as far, but that is usually not a concern. It tends not to snag quite as much when fishing rocky rivers. The size 2 works well on four or six pound test, although I have also used it with eight pound line.

I used to subscribe to the idea that decent sized smallies could not be caught on spinners of this type....not anymore! That four pound bronzer I fought with this past spring changed my thinking! Several of those 41 fish were 2 pounders and a couple of more were in the 3 pound category. Naturally I also caught my share of small fish, but the bigger boys attacked the Super Vibrax with equal vigor!

In-line spinners are not a cure-all for every fishing situation. There are times when smallies simply will not hit them. When they are hitting this type of lure though, the Blue Fox is the best of the bunch that I've ever thrown. The biggest drawback to in-lines is the fact that they cause line twist. Blue Fox uses a "torque free design" to help eliminate most of the line twist. I doubt it alleviates it completely, but it does help.

The next time you want to throw an in-line, give the Super Vibrax a try. This lure has produced consistently for me over the past 3 or 4 years and has worked when others didn't.
