White River Vest - front

White River Vest - back

White River Fishing Vest
by Brian King

I have been using the White River 34 Pocket Fishing Vest for the past year now and I must say I am impressed with the qualities of this affordable vest. As the name implies, it has 34 pockets which allow you to carry just about everything you need even for a full day of wading. Two large front pockets accommodate fly boxes, storage boxes, or bags of plastics. Multiple outer and inner pockets store a myriad of other gear. There is a large cargo pouch in the back that will hold raingear, a net, or lunch. The vest has a built-in load bearing strap which distributes the weight evenly across the shoulders. I am often loaded down with more than I probably need, yet my shoulders never ache and the vest remains comfortable. It also has a padded stretch collar to prevent chaffing around the neck.

Other features include a dual coil retractor for holding forceps or other tools, a removable fly patch, D rings, and a rod holder. All pockets are secured by zippers or velcro. All zippers and pockets are double stitched. The vest is made of a cotton/poly blend and is cool even in the summer. It is very easy to care for, simply throw it in the wash when it gets dirty.

If you are an angler on a budget or are looking for your first vest and don't want to spend $100 or more, the White River vest may be for you. The vest is available through Bass Pro Shops and lists for $49 in the 2000 Master Catalog. A quick check of the Bass Pro website shows the vest listed for $39 (as of July 2000). It is available in emerald, granite, and slate in sizes ranging from medium to 2XL.

I have put my vest through the ringer and it has held up wonderfully. Not one zipper has failed, not one pocket has come apart. It just goes to show you can buy quality fishing gear without breaking the bank.
