Gerber Fisherman Tool
A few months ago I enjoyed reading Brian King's review of the Gerber Pro Scout 600. He covered all the features thoroughly and showed why this would be a great multi-tool for anglers. During the past few months I've had the opportunity to use the Gerber Fisherman and would like to add to Brian's review and talk about some of the added features of the Fisherman.
The Gerber Fisherman takes a number of the great features of the Mult-Plier 600 and the 600 Pro Scout, and adds features specifically designed for the fisherman.
The Fisherman also includes the following components:
I had a chance to give the Fisherman a real test fishing smallies in Door County, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan and Green Bay. An obvious plus, that Brian noted, is the one-hand opening. For deeper hooked fish, the long fishing needle nose pliers can be a lifesaver, especially for the fish. The hook sharpener and quality scissors came in handy many times, as well as a number of the other features. The replaceable cobalt steel wire and hook cutters work great. I use the Rebel Teeny-Wee Crawfish often and am changing the small trebles on a regular basis, because they do tend to bend or break because of their small size. Each of the two triangular inserts has three cutting edges and can be rotated using an included small allen wrench. The replacement feature for the cutters is a great idea. I don't know of another multi-tool with this option.
For me, a slight negative is that due to the extra length of the needle nose pliers, the tool in the sheath is not as compact as the Multi-Plier 600 or 600 Pro Scout. I also wonder if the sheath material may wear over time where the point of the needle nose comes in contact with the material.
Overall I would give the Gerber Fisherman two thumbs up and think that it would be a great addition to any angler's arsenal of equipment.
As Brian noted, for more information on the Fisherman and all the Gerber products go to www.gerberblades.com.

Gerber 600 Pro Scout
by Brian King
Multi-tools are nothing new...they've been around since the original Leatherman hit the market 10 or 11 years ago. Many companies now make their own multi-tools and they have continually improved over the years. My current multi-tool of choice is the Gerber 600 Pro Scout. Gerber is known for its great line of knives and they also have an excellent line of multi-tools. There are several models within the 600 series and you can choose one best suited for your personal needs.
All of the tools in the 600 series have a very good locking system. Each component locks solidly and stays locked! The problem with multi-tools that don't have locking systems is that you can easily cut your knuckles or fingers if a component folds up on you during use. The lock on the Gerber is strong, yet unlocking a component is easily done with the slide of a button. The pliers are stored inside the tool and can be opened one-handed with a flick of the wrist. The pliers also lock solid and are easily retracted.
The Pro Scout comes equipped with the following components:
The Pro Scout comes with a ballistic sheath and a limited lifetime warranty. If you need a more customized tool, you can build your own at Gerber's website. You can choose from a variety of tools as well as different handle colors. Obviously, a multi-tool is not meant to replace the tool box in your garage, but on the other hand, you can't very well carry that tool box on your belt. The Pro Scout can be found at most outdoor and sporting goods stores and places like Wal-Mart. If you're looking for a quality multi-tool to have with you while fishing, the Pro Scout is worth considering.
