Panther Martin Spinners - Regular Fly
by Marc Hutchison

I have used Panther Martin spinners for many years. I primarily use them for river fishing smallmouth bass. In April of this year (1999), I began using the Panther Martin Regular Fly. I have used both the silver blade and gold blade styles. I have never used another spinner with such success. This in-line spinner is responsible for almost 300 smallmouth bass this year just from April - June alone.

The method in which I use the spinner is to cast it upstream and bring it slightly across with a steady retrieve. I generally use the gold bladed spinner when the river is up and cloudy and the silver bladed spinner on sunny days when the river is low and clear.

Rattlesnake Worm
by Marc Hutchison

Before 1998, I had never used plastic worms for my river smallmouth fishing until a friend told me to give the Rattlesnake worm a try. The first time that I tried it, the smallmouth just annihilated it with a vengeance. I only use the 4" pumpkin seed worm with a chartreuse tail. This worm accounted for more smallmouths in ' 98 than any other lure I used.

I rig it on a #1 off-set worm hook (usually an Eagle Claw). I run the hook through the head of the worm and down through the body with the shank of the hook running inside the worm. I fish the worm with the hook point exposed. I also put a split shot on the line about 8" above the head of the worm. I have had no problems with hang-ups on the river, except when the river has been extremely low. I cast the worm upstream and let it drift naturally through riffles and calm pools. In my experience, the smallmouth do not tap at this worm.....they HAMMER it !!!!
