CRKT Stiff K.I.S.S. Knife
by Marc Hutchison

I believe we all would agree there are a few select items that we should not be without while on the river. These items can range from polarized sunglasses to felt- bottom boots. There is one specific item/tool that I have come to rely on heavily. It is the Stiff K.I.S.S. knife manufactured by CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool). This is a very utilitarian knife that can handle almost any task or emergency situation that may arise.

The knife hosts a Tanto Chisel-point or Modified Drop-point fixed blade that is 3.50" long and the AUS6M stainless steel has a bead blast, non-reflective finish. The full-size handle has a finger index notch, friction grooves on both the top and bottom of the handle, and four holes in the handle (which provide lash points in emergency situations and anchors for cord wrapping).

The Stiff K.I.S.S. knife also comes with a form-fitted Zytel sheath ( 1.5 oz.). The sheath has 6 holes and 2 slots that will allow the knife to be lashed to gear or even to a part of the body. The sheath also has weep holes to help keep the knife dry.

I have opted to secure the knife to the shoulder area of my fishing/flotation vest (with handle hanging down). This way, if the knife is needed, I can quickly extract it from the sheath and take care of the business at hand. I usually have small clippers or scissors hanging from my vest (to cut or trim line), but while float fishing, I have lost quite a bit of line while fumbling to get the clippers. Now when I am floating down the river and my lure gets snagged (and I can't retrieve it), I just grab the knife and touch the line......I have saved quite a bit of line by using this method. Also, on a more serious note, this knife is extremely useful in cutting anchor rope. A while back, while floating my home river, my anchor wedged between two large boulders. The current was very strong and I could not get back up river to the anchor. Waves were crashing over my pontoons, so I had to act fast. After a few unsuccessful attempts to free the anchor, I immediately grabbed the K.I.S.S. knife and severed the rope. All it took was one, quick swipe and thankfully I was set free.

I find myself using this knife all day long, for many different tasks, while I am floating the river. This may not be the most important tool to have while floating or wading, but for myself, I won't be caught on the river without it.

The Stiff K.I.S.S. knife comes with sheath, paracord, stainless steel clip, Zytel belt adapter, and Chicago screws.
