ASSALT Plastics
by Marc Hutchison

If you've recently visited a large tackle store or perused the pages of the latest Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops magazines, then you have certainly noticed the plethora of plastic lures that are available to the angler.

If one takes a closer look at the variety of plastics on the market today, one will notice most companies have some variation of a lizard, crawdad, tube, grub, Senko-style worm, etc. With that said, the purpose of this review is not in the comparison of a specific plastic lure to another, but instead, to introduce a quality line of lures to those who may be unfamiliar with this specific tackle company.

ASSALT Premium Bass Lures

Earlier this year (2003), I was introduced to the lures from the "ASSALT Premium Bass Lure" company. ASSALT is a fairly new tackle company based out of California. Their line of plastics are salt impregnated and the outside of the plastics are heavily smothered in salt like a thick honey-teriyaki BBQ sauce over a slab of ribs!

Having never fished ASSALT plastics, I was anxious to get out on the water and test them. Now, just for clarification, my testing procedures are very unscientific. In fact, my testing is very utilitarian. I simply tie on a specific lure, search for a suspecting smallie haunt, and try to present the lure in an appealing manner.....or at least out of the trees.

Throughout this year, I have fished an assortment of ASSALT plastics and jigs with very favorable results. For sake of brevity, here are two quick examples: First, on one occasion, a double-tailed "Spyder Grub" accounted for 14 smallmouth before giving up the ghost. On another outing, again using a double-tailed "Spyder Grub" I had 15 strikes out of 19 casts. As for myself, the above mentioned examples answered my questions concerning the durability and performance of ASSALT plastics.

I would consider myself a "creature of habit" in my fishing tactics. Basically, I use the lures that have proven themselves successful on my home waters (I am sure "confidence" in the lure can be interjected here) and I tend not to vary much from my select few lures. Thankfully, Pete Wolf introduced me to "ASSALT Premium Bass Lures" and they have now found a permanent home in my tackle arsenal....not to mention bringing countless fish to thumb and a big smile to my face.
